The claim about timescale.

The framework holds that substantive deconditioning — the return to your own design after years of operating from imported conditioning — takes about seven years from the moment you consciously begin.

This is not a metaphor. It is a specific claim about cellular timescale.

Most cells in the human body replace themselves over roughly seven years, with significant variation by tissue type. Skin cells turn over in weeks. Bone cells take a decade. The seven-year figure is an average across the major tissue systems. The framework's claim is that conditioning sits in the body at the cellular level, and as cells turn over while you are running strategy and authority correctly, the new cells calibrate to your actual design rather than to the imported patterns.

The honest scope: this is interpretive. Whether deconditioning is literally cellular in a way that biology can confirm is not testable in any laboratory we have access to. What is observable is that people who consistently run strategy and authority for several years describe themselves at the end of the period as substantially different from how they were at the start — and the timescale they describe is closer to seven years than to seven months. Whether the mechanism is cellular or some other slow integrative process, the timescale appears to hold.

We will treat the seven-year frame as canonical because that is how the framework operates. You should treat it as guidance about expectation, not as a stopwatch.

What the cycle looks like.

The phases below are rough, not strict. Your specific seven years will depend on which patterns you started with, what life throws at you during the cycle, and how consistently you run the practice.

Year one is recognition. You start noticing when you are running the Not-Self pattern. The signature and shadow loop becomes legible. Decisions you have made for years suddenly look different in retrospect. Many people in year one describe a feeling of waking up to patterns that had been running invisibly for decades. The recognition itself is not the deconditioning; it is the precondition for it.

Years two and three are rougher water. Old patterns surface as you stop running them. Relationships that were built on your Not-Self renegotiate themselves, or end. The patterns you thought were yours turn out to belong, in part, to specific other people; some of those people quietly disappear from your life when you stop participating in the patterns that connected you. This is often the hardest phase. People who burn out on the work tend to burn out here, not at the start.

Years four and five are settling. Strategy and authority become more automatic. You recognize imported patterns faster, drop them sooner. The decisions are still the decisions, but the body is doing more of the work that the mind used to do, and the work is producing better outcomes more often. The phase has a quieter quality than the first three years.

Years six and seven are integration. The body's default operating mode is your actual design. The Not-Self still appears occasionally — under stress, in old environments, around old patterns — but no longer feels like home. You can identify it within hours rather than within years. People who knew you ten years ago sometimes find you barely recognizable, in a quiet way; people who meet you now often have no idea anything ever required deconditioning.

What slows the cycle.

Two patterns reliably produce regression.

Major life upheaval. Divorce, job loss, a move, a death, the births that change everything. The body goes into survival mode and old patterns return because they are familiar. This is expected and does not mean you have lost the years. Once the upheaval has settled, the practice resumes from where you actually are now, which is further along than it feels.

Returning to environments that hold the original conditioning. Extended stays at parents' homes. The old job. The old social circle. The old neighborhood. The absorption is strong. This is not a problem if the return is temporary; it becomes consequential when the old environment becomes the default again. People in the third or fourth year of a cycle who move back into a long-running source of their conditioning sometimes find themselves needing to start the work over from earlier in the arc.

The framework's gentle implication: pay attention to where you live, and with whom. Environment is not a moral consideration; it is a structural one.

What accelerates the cycle.

Two practices reliably move the work forward.

Consistent authority practice. Each correctly run decision subtracts a little Not-Self pattern. Each override deposits a little. The arithmetic is gentle, and the cumulative effect over years is significant. The most reliable signal that you are progressing through the cycle is that the same kind of decision — the one you used to override habitually — now lands cleanly through your authority more often than it does not.

The decision log. Watching the pattern of your own decisions over time accelerates the recognition that produces the deeper shift. PRISM ships the log specifically for this purpose. Reading entries from a year ago alongside entries from today is one of the more illuminating uses of the framework available; the patterns you were not yet seeing back then are sometimes embarrassingly visible now, and the patterns you can barely see today will be obvious next year.

The two practices compound. Authority work without the log is real; the log without the authority work is journaling without traction. Both together accelerate the cycle in a way neither alone manages.

The realistic frame.

The single biggest mistake newcomers to the framework make is expecting a six-month transformation. The framework can produce dramatic clarity quickly; the conceptual understanding lands fast and feels revelatory. The embodied shift is slow. People who burn out on the work tend to be people who expected fast results and treat the slow timescale as evidence of failure.

Plan for the long arc. Your design has been running through your body since birth. The conditioning has been layering on top of it since before you can remember. Returning to clean operation takes time because everything that took you away from it took time, too. There is no shortcut, and the search for one is itself usually a Not-Self pattern (urgency from an open Root, often).

The compensating gift is that the work is reliable. Seven years of consistent practice tend to produce something. The work is not a gamble; it is a slow but lawful return.
